The long-awaited second fight between middleweight adversaries Liam Smith and Chris Eubank Jr is set for September 2 at Manchester's AO Arena.
Fans have been eagerly waiting for this rematch, which is expected to bring a thrilling end to their ongoing rivalry. The two fighters previously clashed in a high-energy battle at the AO Arena in January, where the fight concluded a minute into the fourth round. Smith claimed the win with two impressive knockdowns that left spectators on the edge of their seats.
Disgruntled by the referee's decision and motivated to redeem himself, Eubank Jr invoked the rematch clause in their contract and has been training intensively with the aim of dealing a revenge loss to Liverpool's Smith.
The anticipated face-off was initially scheduled earlier this year. However, it had to be deferred after Smith sustained a minor injury during his training regime, which required some recovery time. The delay in the bout has only heightened the tension between the two fighters, setting the stage for a hotly contested showdown on September 2.
Smith expressed his eagerness for the fight, stating, "Now that the date is confirmed, I'm eager to settle this score once and for all. I'm fully recovered, injury-free, and looking forward to ending Chris Eubank Jr's career on September 2.”
Eubank Jr is also ready for the confrontation. "No more delays, no more excuses," he stated. "Smith can’t avoid this forever. September 2 is my day of vindication."
Ben Shalom, CEO and promoter of BOXXER, commented: "The discord between Liam Smith and Chris Eubank Jr has rapidly grown into one of the most contentious in British boxing.
"Their January bout was one of the most thrilling matches in BOXXER history. We predict a quick sell-out of tickets for the September 2 event at the AO Arena as fans hurry to witness what promises to be another unforgettable battle."
Kalle Sauerland, global head of boxing at Wasserman Boxing, stated: "Good things come to those who wait, and the delay will only make victory that much sweeter for Chris when he finally faces Liam Smith on September 2.
"Chris has demonstrated patience and discipline throughout the delay. Our recent conversations have shown that he is intensely focused on setting the record straight. We expect an electrifying performance from Chris."
