Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-ting has secured her spot in the women’s featherweight final of the 2024 Paris Olympics, despite ongoing disputes regarding her eligibility. Lin, along with Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, has been embroiled in controversy after being disqualified from last year's World Boxing Championships by the International Boxing Association (IBA) due to alleged issues with gender eligibility testing.
Both Lin and Khelif continue to compete at the Paris Olympics, a decision made despite their disqualification from the IBA's previous event. On Tuesday, Khelif earned her place in the welterweight final, and Lin followed suit with a decisive victory over Esra Yildiz Kahraman, ensuring her entry into the gold-medal match.
In her bout, Lin demonstrated exceptional skill, defeating Kahraman by unanimous decision. Following the match, Kahraman made a gesture reminiscent of Lin's earlier opponent, Svetlana Staneva. Kahraman, a 27-year-old from Turkey, performed a symbolic 'X' sign with two fingers, a gesture that Staneva had used previously. This 'X' symbol has been interpreted as representing female XX chromosomes, although Kahraman did not comment on the gesture’s significance when approached by media.
With this win, Lin, who is 28 years old, will face Poland's Julia Atena Szeremeta in the featherweight final. Szeremeta, 20, earned her spot after defeating Nesthy Petecio of the Philippines, a silver medallist from the Tokyo Games. Lin, who has previously claimed two gold medals at the World Championships, is now on the brink of achieving her Olympic dream, having previously been eliminated in the round of 16 by Petecio during the Tokyo Olympics.
Despite her achievements, Lin faced controversy at last year's World Championships, where she reached the semi-finals but was disqualified by the IBA for not meeting the eligibility criteria set for female competitors. The IBA's decision to disqualify Lin and Khelif was based on their regulations concerning gender eligibility.
However, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has supported Lin and Khelif's participation in the Paris Olympics. The IOC, which suspended the IBA in 2019 due to concerns over the organization’s finances, governance, ethics, and officiating, has maintained that both boxers are eligible to compete in the women’s category, provided their passports list them as female. This stance has been affirmed by IOC President Thomas Bach, who stated that there was "never any doubt" about their gender.
A recent press conference attempted to clarify the situation but only added to the confusion, with conflicting statements regarding the reasons for the IBA's disqualification.
Looking ahead, Khelif will compete for the welterweight gold medal against Yang Liu of China on Friday at 16:51 EST. Lin’s featherweight final match is scheduled to take place on Saturday, starting at 15:30 EST, marking the culmination of the boxing events at the Paris Olympics.
As the final bouts approach, both Lin Yu-ting and Imane Khelif have become focal points of a broader discussion about eligibility and fairness in Olympic boxing, with their performances and the controversies surrounding them capturing the attention of the global sports community.
